Conventional phones offer a voice quality which is in essence trapped
in the 1930's, and even mobile phones have been engineered to
reproduce the same low standards. With the growth of VoIP and Skype,
we have come to see that wideband audio (or high-definition voice, HD)
is a possibility, and we actually like the sound of it!
When will HD voice come to fixed phones and cellphones, and what will
it take technologically to make that happen? Martyn will talk about
codecs, how HD voice affects the handset, and also discuss some of the
implementation options that can be used including TrFO
(Transcoder-free Operation), TFO (Tandem-Free Operation) and the
GSMA's IPX (IP eXchange) initiative.
